Crossing 2024 Levan akin
Levan Akin was born in Sweden to Georgian parents. He often portrays his Georgian heritage as a source of both pride and conflict, highlighting its beauty and complexity while also critiquing its conservative aspects. We are delighted to welcome Levan Akin in London to present both his earlier film And Then We Danced and Crossing.
Crossing opened the Panorama section at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and went on to win the Teddy prize. Akin's cinematic mastery and visual sense comes into its own in this moving tale set in the darker sides of Istanbul. Akin's masterful use of both traditional and contemporary music not only enhances the emotional impact but also evokes the cultural landscape he portrays.
Levan Akin’s fourth feature film, following the acclaimed and controversial And Then We Danced, tells the story of Lia, a retired Georgian teacher who sets off on a journey to Turkey to fulfill her recently deceased sister’s last wish: to find her long lost niece Tekla. Accompanied by her young neighbour, Achi, Lia discovers that the beautiful city of Istanbul is full of connections and possibilities. But searching for someone who never intended to be found is harder than they expected – until they meet Evrim, a lawyer fighting for trans rights. As Lia and Achi weave their way through the city’s backstreets, Tekla starts to feel closer than ever.
